Using Windows 95 ….today

Here is a quick video of Rich Menga of PC Mech showing how he’s running Windows 95. You may ask why would anyone do that today. Well Rich did it to play vintage DOS –games. Someone else may do it to use a specific program or just for the adventure(like I did at one time). How is he running Windows 95? He installed a program called VirtualBox which can install operating systems in a virtual environment. Rich gives us some excellent software recommendations that enable you to use(barely) Windows 95 in today's world. I imagine if you had an old PC or laptop running Windows 95 you could use a similar setup.

Here is a quick list of programs Rich is running:

• Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2
• Web Browser K-Meleon
• Instant messenger Miranda
• Microsoft Rich Editor to install Miranda
• Word processor AbiWord Version 2.4.6

Here is my version of using Windows 95 inside Microsoft’s Virtual PC that I did awhile back. It’s kind of glimpse into PC history.

Windows 95 in Virtual PC

This is me using Microsoft Virtual PC Version 6. This is actually a pretty cool program which I installed Windows 95. The video is pretty self explanatory. Enjoy and see a glimpse into the past.

Msconfig utility for Windows 2000 users

Is a handy utility item for editing start up items from Microsoft. It was included in Windows 98,98se and XP. Unfortunately it was not included Windows 95, NT or 2000. I was spoiled with it when I ran Windows 98se but, when I moved to Windows 2000 Pro I missed it. I did find that you can download from this website and insert it in for Windows 95 , NT and 2000 Pro.

-For Windows 95 users you download it and insert in your c:windows\system folder
-Windows 2000 Pro users can insert in c:winnt\system32

Does not have to be run from those folders. It can be left on your desktop or folder of choice and run from there.Inserting in above folders alloys you to run it from start/run option. Click on Start button, click on Run and type in msconfig. This is a handy utility for trimming down those start up programs that can slow down your start up time and resources.
